HES Farm to School History
Pre 2007
- Parent, teacher, staff and community volunteers organized various field trips, farm days, harvest taste tests and other food, farm and nutrition related activities at HES
- Wellness Committee wrote FTS grant proposal to VT Agency of Agriculture in fall 2006 – were awarded $13,000 to start FTS program at HES
2007 to 2010
- Peter Allison hired to coordinate program in Spring of 2007, HES school board allocated additional funds in 2008 and 2009 to support FTS program
- Set monthly agricultural themes (maple syrup, seed starting, grains, dairy, extending the growing season, root vegetables, harvest vegetables)
- Conduct taste tests related to monthly themes (apples, root vegetables, granola, berries, apple sauce, salsa)
- Set up displays in central foyer around monthly themes
- Organize Farm to School Days – spring 2007, Fall 2009 bringing local farmers and producers to school – students travel to each station during morning
- Organized Hartland Farm Fest – Spring 2008, 2009, 2010 (celebrate local farms and food and raise funds for FTS (net $2000 in 2010)
- Make and talk about salsa in Spanish classes and make world famous salsa for sale with student art on labels (2007, 2008, 2009)
- Coordinate field trips to area farms for maple syrup, planting, harvesting, dairy (LeMax, Richardson, Staples, Cedar Mountain Farm)
- In 2009/2010 3rd grade made monthly visits to Cedar Mountain Farm
- Built hoop house with 8th grade Design and Technology class and installed two raised beds; made use of new community garden for growing for family and consumer science
- Support purchases of local food for cafeteria of: syrup, corn, eggs, potatoes, onions, carrots, cabbage, greens and other root vegetables
- Arrange annual purchase of 15 bushels of apples from Wellwood Orchard in Springfield for tastings, snacks, apple sauce makes
- Arranged purchase of commercial food processor for cafeteria, materials for FCS room (food mills, food supplies), rolling cart for taste tests
- FTS connected with Wellness Committee and participate in Health Week and other food related discussions/activities
- Organized class visits and participated in classroom activities for 7/8th grade science, social studies, language arts, art, Spanish, Design / Technology, FCS
- Created and update www.HartlandFarm2School.org website, post regularly school newsletter updates, and present to staff and school board
- Recruit and supervise interns to support FTS program
- Coordinate fundraising to support program (raised over $7,000 in 3 years)
- Represent school at regional and statewide FTS events and on Vermont FTS Network
